What is author supervision?

Author supervision is a set of activities carried out to ensure that the technological, architectural-stylistic, construction, and other technical solutions and indicators of the commissioned facility comply with the solutions and indicators specified in the approved project documentation by the Client.
Author supervision includes:
– providing the Client with drawings in case of changes to the previously developed and approved design project;
– visiting the site once a week at the initial stage of construction and no more than twice a week at the final stage;
– providing consulting services to the Developer’s representative regarding the decorative author elements developed by the Contractor, artistic finishing (method of applying material to the wall), and material jointing;

Cost of author supervision:

The approximate cost of author supervision is 25-30 thousand rubles per month.
As a rule, author supervision is not limited to resolving artistic issues by designers on-site.
Builders and the client often view the designer as a manager capable of solving any issues that are difficult for builders or the client to resolve, for example:
1. Technologies for installing complex equipment and finishing materials
2. Ordering equipment and finishing materials
3. Monitoring delivery times of materials.
4. Monitoring work completion times.
5. Making changes to the project due to the incompetence of the contractors.
6. Negotiating with the supplier about replacing materials or equipment.

Why is author supervision necessary?

In fact, author supervision is necessary for 4 reasons:
1. During construction, it is necessary to correct mistakes made by the designer in the project.
2. Changes need to be made due to mistakes made by builders.
3. The client needs to make changes to the project as they come up with ideas on how to improve it.
4. The foreman or the client’s representative (construction coordinator) is unable to handle managerial functions.
In this case, the designer acts as the construction coordinator.

Designer responsibilities during author supervision:

What the designer cannot be responsible for:

1. The quality of the work performed. Since builders are not under their responsibility. Finishers usually sign a separate contract with the client.
2. The timelines for the work performed. The designer, according to the contract with the client, is obliged to complete and deliver the project on time. They are not responsible for the construction timelines.
3. The timelines for the delivery of materials.
4. The fact that the client did not have a clear idea of how the implemented project would look. When the client approves the project, they take on part of the responsibility for the result.

What the designer is responsible for:

1. The equipment specified in the project must be easily installed considering the installation dimensions laid out in the project. For example, if the project includes a niche for installing a shower cabin, the cabin must fit within the dimensions of the niche.
2. The materials specified in the project must possess sufficient operational properties as discussed in the technical specifications.
3. Custom-made author elements must be technologically feasible to produce. There must be a real possibility to manufacture these elements.
