A studio apartment is a budget-friendly housing option for single individuals and young couples who have not yet had children. The size of studio apartments varies: an open space can be more than 50 m2 or less than 20 m2. Financial constraints force many people to buy small studios, but this does not mean that they will feel cramped and uncomfortable in the apartment. Proper planning and design can achieve much more than it seems at first glance.
Functionality and Aesthetics
When creating the design of a small studio apartment, the specialist must maintain a balance between the beauty and functionality of the space. If the living area is 12 m2, 13 m2, or 15 m2, you will have to give up bulky furniture and unnecessary items. It is important to note that living in a small apartment without partitions is categorically contraindicated for those who tend to hoard and collect: a studio will only have space for items that you use regularly. If you only have 12 m2 at your disposal, not a single square meter should go to waste.
Visually Expanding the Apartment
Not all buyers choose an apartment without partitions for financial reasons. Studios have long ceased to be exclusively budget housing: in the USA, they became popular among the golden youth, bohemians, and creative intelligentsia as early as the mid-20th century. A well-designed studio apartment creates a sense of space, a large and open area. This effect is achieved through well-chosen furniture, successful color solutions, and a rejection of excess. What should be considered when developing the design of a small studio apartment?
- When decorating walls and ceilings, it is advisable to prefer a light color palette. Pastel shades such as white, light gray, light green, and beige will look ideal. Avoid overloading the walls with decor; paintings should be medium-sized, light, and minimalist.
- Experienced designers do not recommend using more than three colors in the interior. This does not apply to achromatic colors: white, black, gray. Nuanced color palettes are composed based on adjacent colors on the color wheel, but differing in lightness and saturation.
- In related-contrasting color palettes, complementary colors are added, which are located at the opposite end of the color wheel.
- If you live in a small studio, – give up classic heavy curtains with bulky drapes and valances. Instead, it is better to use thin roller blinds or light-colored shades.
- For very small apartments, light solid curtains are suitable. Keep in mind that contrasting curtains visually break up the space.
- There is another feature that is important for the interior design of a small studio apartment – it does not tolerate clutter. Small figurines, miniature paintings, and lamps – all of these visually clutter the space. You will have to put such items in a box or give them to friends.
- If a monochromatic interior seems too boring to you, it can be refreshed with a few vibrant accents. These can be bright cushions, pieces of furniture, or decor.
- Owners of small studios will have to give up potted houseplants or bulky planters. If you do not like restrained modern style, a monochromatic interior can be enlivened with natural motifs: use natural wood in the finishing, hang paintings with natural motifs.
- A colored ceiling and bright walls are a bad solution for a studio apartment. They visually reduce the space.
- The design of a small studio apartment implies zoning. Dividing into zones not only makes the space more comfortable for living but also visually organizes the interior, helping to navigate it.
- Large chandeliers will not take away extra square meters from you, but they will be inappropriate in a small space. Instead, it is better to use recessed ceiling lighting and wall sconces.
