The niche is an indentation in one of the walls in an apartment of various sizes. It can be a small recess for placing a decorative element, or it can be a fairly large space that can be used as an addition to the room. Either way, this feature of the room’s space must be taken into account when designing the interior. This is what we will discuss below.
How can you use a niche in a studio apartment?
Two main design ideas for a studio apartment with a niche can be highlighted.
The first is functional use. What is usually placed in a niche?
- Children’s or play area.
In a studio apartment, you can create a comfortable children’s area where a crib, playpen, or simply an interesting corner for the child to play can easily fit.
This solution will help not only create a sense of a personal room for the child but also maintain cleanliness in the rest of the room, where toys will not be scattered around. It is worth noting that in this case, it is advisable to separate the niche with a curtain or some kind of door to ensure that this corner is truly a separate zone.
- Kitchen or dining area.
Depending on the size of the apartment, the use of the niche becomes more of a necessity rather than a design luxury, driven by a severe lack of free space. It is completely understandable that a person wants to separate the dining area from the living area. Therefore, a semblance of a dining area can be placed in the niche.
- Rest area or bedroom.
Given that when designing a studio apartment with a niche, this space always turns out to be quite secluded, placing a sleeping area or a relaxation zone for adults in the niche becomes an ideal solution. Thanks to its location in the niche, a bed, sofa, or armchair will allow you to separate yourself from the rest of the apartment, which, with proper decoration of this space, will become an excellent place for rest or sleep.
- Dressing room.
Of course, transforming the niche into a dressing room is an excellent solution. By placing a wardrobe with clothes in the niche, you can not only free up a lot of space in the room but also fulfill the dream of most women of having their own dressing room.
- Home office.
You can place a desk with a computer in the niche, where the apartment owner can work, read, conduct negotiations via Skype, etc. This is a great solution for a business person who does not stop working even at home, or simply works from home all the time. If you have a hobby that requires an office, this will also be an excellent solution for you.
The second idea for a room with a niche in a studio apartment is to use it as a decorative element. In this case, you can place dishes, decorative elements, or sculptures here. The niche can also be beautifully illuminated or used to display collections or books.
Finishing the niche. If you use it as a shelf, keep in mind that the interior covering should be durable. Usually, the inner surface of the niche is covered with white facade paint, and the bottom surface is covered with glass. However, depending on the artistic tasks that the designer sets for themselves, the niche can be covered with wallpaper, wooden panels, decorative plaster, etc.
Additionally, the niche can be used as a color object in the interior. If there is more than one niche in the apartment, a rhythmic pattern can be created. It is not necessary for the niches to be rectangular.
The designer must remember: the size and configuration of the niche should be developed taking into account the tools of the finishers. For example, it is physically very difficult to level a narrow deep niche and apply decorative plaster to it. It is also important not to overdo this technique. It is not advisable to cover a large section of the wall with drywall to create several decorative niches. Do this only if this technique is artistically expressive and adds functionality to the apartment, rather than creating problems.
