The size of the studio is the most important parameter to consider when planning a renovation of an apartment without partitions. Studio apartments with an area of no more than 30m2 are considered small-sized. It is best to entrust the layout of such spaces to an experienced designer who knows how to effectively use every square centimeter of living space. Studios with an area of 20 m2 should be not only visually spacious but also extremely functional—especially if two people live in the apartment. How to maximize the use of space?

A living space of this size is considered budget-friendly. 20 square meters is sufficient for the comfortable living of one person or a couple. It is important to note that small studios are not suitable for families with children or large pets, as they will lack personal space. However, making a small space comfortable for two people is a feasible task. This is achievable by an experienced designer who knows the techniques to make the studio as functional as possible.
How to free up space?
A specialist who takes on the design of a 20 sq. m. studio apartment must first consider the needs of the future residents. Who are they—a young couple, a busy student, or a freelance artist? To correctly divide the space into zones, it is necessary to take into account the lifestyle of the people who will live in the apartment. The second most important task for the designer is to arrange the furniture and decor items in such a way that as much free space as possible remains in the studio. To properly furnish a studio apartment, use the advice of experienced specialists.
- First of all, future residents of the studio apartment will need to get rid of unnecessary clutter: old items, unwanted souvenirs, and small decor items. You should only keep those things that you will use regularly. The design of a studio apartment in 20 square meters does not imply the presence of miniature frames, figurines, or floor lamps on the shelves. Instead, paintings or posters are usually hung on the walls. They should be of medium size and in neutral colors.
- In small studio apartments, it is important to ensure that as few items as possible are on the floor. Avoid using floor lamps, floor vases, potted plants, and other similar elements.
- The era of standard renovations, including the joining of balconies to kitchens and rooms, has come to an end. Today, this is one of more than 10 changes in apartments that are prohibited by the Moscow government decree No. 1104 dated December 29, 2017. It came into effect on February 14, 2018. However, there remains one option for combining the living space with the balcony: in those buildings where it is allowed to remove the window sill, “French” sliding doors can be installed.
- The interior design of a studio apartment with an area of 20 sq. m is difficult to implement without using transformable furniture. A bed built into a wardrobe and a shelf with a folding desk can help save space. A bright and spacious workspace can be organized on the windowsill, which will become an organic continuation of the table.
- Using furniture to divide the apartment into zones is a good solution. Instead of installing glass partitions, you can place a bar counter, wardrobe, or small shelf at the boundary of different zones. A sofa can even serve as a natural divider: it is often placed between the living room and the kitchen.
- If partitions are unavoidable, designers advise approaching this task with creativity. Materials such as frosted glass, drywall, wooden and metal grids can be used for partitions. A small screen that can be removed at any moment would be an excellent solution.
- To reduce space in the kitchen area, it is advisable to prefer built-in appliances. It is better to choose a ceramic stove, if possible with two burners—it takes up less space and is easier to clean. When starting a renovation in a studio apartment, ensure good ventilation that will remove smoke and unpleasant odors from the room. It is better to make the dining table extendable.
- If space in the studio apartment is critically lacking and the ceiling height is over 4 meters, the sleeping area should be organized on a mezzanine level, which can be located above the bathroom or guest area. Try to use the space under the ceiling as efficiently as possible.
